महर्षि वाल्मीकिजीको कुछ लोग निम्न जातिका बतलाते हैं। पर वाल्मीकिरामायण ७। ९६ । १९, ७। ९३।१७ तथा अध्यात्मरामायण ७।७। ३१ में इन्होंने स्वयं अपनेको प्रचेताका पुत्र कहा है।

मनुस्मृति १। ३५ में 'प्रचेतसं वसिष्ठं च भृगुं नारदमेव च' प्रचेताको वसिष्ठ, नारद, पुलस्त्य, कवि आदिका भाई लिखा है। स्कन्दपुराणके वैशाखमाहात्म्यमें इन्हें जन्मान्तरका व्याध बतलाया है। इससे सिद्ध है कि जन्मान्तरमें ये व्याध थे। व्याध-जन्मके पहले भी स्तम्भ नामके श्रीवत्सगोत्रीय ब्राह्मण थे। व्याध-जन्ममें शङ्ख ऋषिके सत्सङ्गसे, रामनामके जपसे ये दूसरे जन्ममें ‘अग्निशर्मा' (मतान्तरसे रत्नाकर) हुए। वहाँ भी व्याधोंके सङ्गसे कुछ दिन प्राक्तन संस्कारवश व्याध-कर्ममें लगे। फिर, सप्तर्षियोंके सत्संगसे मरा- मरा जपकर—बाँबी पड़नेसे वाल्मीकि नामसे ख्यात हुए और वाल्मीकि रामायणकी रचना की।

बंगलाके कृत्तिवासरामायण, मानस, अध्यात्मरामा० २।६।६४ से ९२, आनन्दरामायण राज्यकाण्ड १४। २१–४९, भविष्यपुराण प्रतिसर्ग० ४ । १० में भी यह कथा थोड़े हेर-फेरसे स्पष्ट है। गोस्वामी तुलसीदासजीने वस्तुतः यह कथा निराधार नहीं लिखी। अतएव इन्हें नीच जातिका मानना सर्वथा भ्रममूलक है।
