On March 24, 2015, Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat etched her name into the annals of Indian history as the first woman officer in the Indian Navy to make the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. A specialist in intelligence warfare and a dedicated Observer, she was just 27 years old when her Dornier surveillance aircraft tragically crashed into the Arabian Sea during a night mission off the coast of Goa. Only two months prior to her martyrdom, she had proudly marched in the first-ever all-women contingent during the 2015 Republic Day Parade, symbolizing a new era for women in the armed forces. Born into a naval family and married to a fellow naval officer, her life was a testament to "Service Before Self," and her legacy continues to inspire a generation of young women to break barriers and serve the nation with localized honors like the Shaheed Park in Kurthala and a dedicated 7.5 km memorial road in Haryana.
